A new Operating System? Google Chrome OS

Google announced recently that it will enter the Operating System market and go toe-to-toe with Apple and Microsoft. The OS is called Google Chrome OS. With the recent release of Google Chrome web browser, this precedes the new announcement.
Some say this is a hoax, but there has been much press stating otherwise.
